Identity Theft 911 Presents the Best Ways to Avoid Getting Scammed ...

In the wake of any major and destructive weather event, there is always confusion, misinformation, and disarray. But if you?re lucky enough to live in a place like the U.S., there is also a massive outpouring of aid.

Unfortunately, there are people out there who use both post-disaster confusion as well as the goodwill of others to grab a piece of the aid pie.

That being said, here?s a helpful list from Identity Theft 911, a group that specializes in ?identity and data risk management, resolution and education services,? detailing the top 5 best ways to avoid getting scammed by thieves looking to take advantage of Superstorm Sandy [all block quotes from Identity Theft 911]:

Identity thieves:

Protect important information and documents. Whether you?re in a shelter, staying with friends, or crashing on your family?s couch, never let these items leave your sight. They are the key to your identity ? and you will need this information to prove who you are.

Another tip: Ask the post office to hold your mail if you have to leave your home. This will keep the bad guys from finding sensitive information that may be left in your mailbox.

Insurance scams

If you?ve experienced damage to any of your personal property, call your insurance company first.? Don?t fall for fly-by-night ?professionals? who make false guarantees about a claims check, damage appraisal, inspection or water quality testing.

Illegitimate websites

Identity Theft 911 Presents the Best Ways to Avoid Getting Scammed Post Superstorm Sandy

Double check the legitimacy of the site you?re clicking to from your email, Facebook or elsewhere. When in doubt, check your local American Red Cross or the National FEMA site to find local help.

Fake charitable organizations

Watch out for scammy charitable organizations that have names similar to reputable institutions. These sites often end in .com (instead of the typical .org for nonprofits).

They?re designed to fool you into thinking you?re donating to a good cause when, in reality, you?re donating your money and personal and financial information to thieves.

Photos with malware

Identity Theft 911 Presents the Best Ways to Avoid Getting Scammed Post Superstorm Sandy

This scam strikes after any type of disaster or tragedy. Thieves count on people to be hungry for news, so they infect images and video with malware.

Stick with legitimate sites, such as your local news station or newspaper for the latest information. Be wary of links on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites.

Smarter electric grids could help us weather stormy future

10 hrs.

As of Tuesday morning, Sandy was blamed for power outages affecting more than 8 million people. Although?of little help to people in the dark today, so-called smart-grid technologies being installed around the country will make the electric grid more resilient to future storms, according to an industry expert.

One caveat: ?It is economically unfeasible to storm-proof your system, and by storm-proof I mean resilient to anything that could happen,? Dean Oskvig, president of engineering consulting firm Black & Veatch?s global energy business, told NBC News Tuesday.

But utilities are installing technology such as self-healing switches that automatically route power around outages in an effort to minimize disruptions to service, he said.

Much of the smart grid is really about the installation of sensors and other equipment that offer utilities real-time monitoring of the grid so that they can detect and isolate power outages more quickly, which limits their spread and impact.?

Real-time monitoring of the grid also enables integration of small-scale distributed power stations onto the grid, which can provide electricity to a neighborhood, for example, when the city?s main plant is down.

Distributed power stations harken back to early days of the electric system when it was a hodgepodge of ?small individual generators all over the place and it was simply chaotic,? Oskvig said. As a result, greater reliability and efficiency drove evolution toward a system that relies on central power plants.

Today, however, the communications technology that underpins smart-grid systems ?has a way of accommodating a lot more distributed generation than we were able to do in the past,? he added.?

By the same token, a more intelligent grid is able to accommodate increased wind and solar power, which are plagued by intermittency.

?But, when you are faced with something like the storm out east, a smart grid will only take you so far,? Oskvig said.?

Utilities can make their grids more resilient with more traditional approaches such as?putting more of their power lines underground, which puts them out of the way of wind-toppled trees. But undergrounding lines costs several million dollars per mile versus a few hundred thousand dollars for overhead lines.

And even when lines are underground, that doesn?t mean the system is storm-proof. Power lines in New York City, for example, are already mostly underground. That didn?t stop floodwater from shutting down substations, Oskvig noted.

What measures a utility takes to make their systems more resilient to storms is a cost-benefit calculation. Sandy is considered a once-in-a-generation-type storm. Is it worth spending to put in?underground lines, install self-healing technology or build more, smaller distributed generation plants?

Given that Sandy is the type of storm that experts believe is consistent with global climate change, a more resilient grid seems prudent for our stormier future, a future that by some accounts is already here.

In the last year?New York, for example, has seen two tropical storms and a ?freak? snowstorm on Halloween 2011 that dumped a foot of snow. Each of those storms led to costly power outages that were, in isolation, considered rare events.

The cost of implementing the technologies required to smarten up and improve the grid will cost about $1.5 trillion over the next two decades, Mark Brownstein with the Environmental Defense Fund told American Public Media?s Marketplace on Monday.?

Know the Ins and Outs of Renovating Old Properties [Guest Post ...

Many people dream of fixing up and old house so it becomes a winning combination of old charm and modern comfort. You can purchase a ?fixer upper? at a reasonable price and then put the money you saved into renovations that suit your style, taste and budget. Renovating an old house can be a great way to increase the value of an older property and create the perfect home.

Before you buy a fixer-upper, it is important to be aware that renovating is a major project that can take years of hard work. Because it is such a huge undertaking, there are some common mistakes that can cost both time and money. Here?s how to avoid them.

Step 1: Make a Plan

Start by figuring out how much time the repairs will take and how much all of it will cost. This step is important because it will help set up structure to a process that can snowball into a multi-year ordeal that can cost thousands of pounds than you originally thought. Doing research and making a reasonable plan will keep you on track.

Step 2: Hire Professionals

It can be helpful to consult with a professional estimator to make sure your goals are realistic. You should also research the best contractors in your area and budget accordingly. This will ensure that your project is handled in the best, safest way possible.

Step 3: Safety First

Older buildings, though beautiful, can pose safety hazards. This is because laws about the safety of construction were different in the past and also deterioration over time can make a building unsafe. For this reason, consulting with professional contractors is very important. Check the electricity and make the necessary repairs. Check for structural problems. Go through the house and make sure that there are no surfaces containing lead paint. Look for any deterioration in the building and test for asbestos, which will need to be removed by a professional. Finally, do not try to make specialized repairs yourself if you do not have the proper training. Health problems as a result of inattention to safety will cause the cost of your project to skyrocket.

Step 4: Store Everything Correctly

Simply spend a little more money on a plastic covering that can prevent water damage to your building materials. That way, you?ll ensure that your materials maintain their top quality and you won?t have to buy new ones after a rainstorm.

Step 5: Big Picture Thinking

Keep in mind the end result. Will your repairs fit well with the original design of the house? Think about how to combine your tastes with those of the original owner, thereby creating changes that complement rather than clash. This way, you will have a winning combination of original beauty with all the modern updates and conveniences.

Raven Banner Entertainment and Ultra 8 Pictures unleash - GAT

??Raven Banner Entertainment and Ultra 8 Pictures??are proud to announce

? MANBORG

Opens Theatrically in Toronto November 2nd
at The Royal ? 608 College St.
and other Canadian cities

Raven Banner Entertainment and Ultra 8 Pictures are set to unleash demonic dictators and a vigilante cyborg on Canada with the theatrical release of Steven Kostanksi?s Manborg. Shot as a throwback to ?80s sci-fi horror action films, Manborg tells the story of a dead soldier who finds himself reanimated as a cyborg killing machine, which Twitchfilm calls ?a creative and hilarious love letter to the VHS sub culture?.

?

Half-man, half-cyborg: Manborg. Killed while battling the forces of hell, a super-soldier is brought back from the dead in order to fight an army of Nazi vampires and demons led by the nefarious Count Draculon. There?s an Australian punker, a knife-wielding anime chick, a kung fu master (voiced with deliriously pitch-perfect stoicism by Kyle Herbert, the narrator from Dragon Ball Z), and of course the titular Manborg, a literal cinematic Frankenstein of pulp sci-fi pop culture references.

?

Manborg, is directed by Steven Kostanski, the special effects prodigy of Winnipeg?s filmmaking collective Astron-6 (Father?s Day), who deftly juggles co-writing, editing and directing duties on a micro budget of below $2K with the ambitious creation of an extraordinary barrage of elaborate miniatures, iconic costumes and delirious stop-motion creatures. Most impressively, despite drawing from so many sources, Manborg?s universe remains unmistakably original, and as a director, Kostanki?s vision is unquestionably unique and his talent impossible to deny.

?

Executive produced by TIFF Midnight Madness guru Colin Geddes (Ultra 8 Pictures) and Toronto After Dark?s Peter Kupowsky, Manborg celebrated its world premiere at Austin?s 2011 Fantastic Fest, and also impressed fans at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, Fantasia, and has played more than 30 major film festivals worldwide including Whistler, Lund in Sweden, Boston Underground, U.K. Sci-Fi, and Neuchatel in Switzerland. Also playing with MANBORG is Kostanski?s brand-new short film BIO-COP, an epic emulation of 80s-era cop movie trailers, meticulously recreating the experience of watching VHS-era cheese with full-tilt gonzo gusto.

?

?Manborg is an incredible achievement? says Don McKellar, and? FilmThreat.com calls the film: ?A glorious mixture of claymation, computer graphics, practical effects, make-up and a DIY ethic that?s above and beyond most science fiction movies being produced. Manborg is a total ?hoot.?
Gearing up for theatrical release of the cult hit film Manborg, Raven Banner Entertainment has just commissioned a new poster by the incredibly talented Toronto artist, Jason Edmiston, whose fondness for pop culture, especially movies and toys, often creep into his work and makes him the perfect artist to illustrate the awesome power of Manborg.

?

Manborg is being screened theatrically in the following cities:

?

Oct 26 ? Nov 1 ? Winnipeg Cinematheque

Director Steve Kostanski and actors/Astron 6 members Matthew Kennedy, Adam Brooks, Conor Sweeney & Meredith Sweeney in attendance Oct 26 & 27.

Nov 2 ? 8 ? Toronto, The Royal

Actor/Writer Jeremy Gillespie in attendance Nov 3.

?

Gender of baby beluga whale revealed

Brenna Hernandez / Shedd Aquarium

The beluga calf has been improving her milk-intake efficiency and latching onto mom an average of 20 minutes a day.

By Laura T. Coffey, TODAY contributing editor

Back in August, we here at Animal Tracks were cheered to announce the birth of a bouncing baby beluga whale at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. At the time, no one knew the gender of the baby; he or she was being allowed to bond with mom without any physical interaction with human handlers.

The time finally arrived for the whopping infant to receive a physical examination, and on Tuesday aquarium officials issued a happy announcement: It?s a girl!

The female beluga calf will make her public debut with her mother, Mauyak (pronounced ?MAH-yak?), at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. Aquarium guests should have plenty to see: The 5-foot-long calf already weighs more than 205 pounds and has been gaining 12 to 15 pounds a week.

An Intro To Probiotics & Fermented Foods | Brian-Speaks

Yesterday I had such an amazing opportunity, I got to share with the world a brief tidbit of my passion for gut health, probiotics and fermented foods. While I was a bit nervous to start I think it came of clearly and I got a quick chance to spread the word. I can?t say enough how important these friendly micro organisms are for our overall health and I will be adding some resources that I believe will help you learn more about them. For now enjoy this short interview I did on Texas Living on the way, why and how.

(see below for a quick recap)

What Are Probiotics?
Helpful bacteria that live all around us and make up a huge piece of the digestive process. They help do many functions including assimilation and utilization of food to helping regulate our immune system, which is largely located in the gut. The average healthy adult has anywhere from 3-4lbs. of bacteria (good and bad) in their digestive tract.

Where Are They Found?
They are all over, but we get them mostly from probiotic rich foods like properly fermented vegetables, milk products like yogurt and kefir as well as fermented drinks such as kombucha. Every culture typically has some type of fermented food that accompanies as meal; the Japanese eat miso or natto, the Germans eat sauerkraut, the Koreans eat kimchi. Unfortunately we have lost these traditions in our current food system which in turn has comprimised our digestive health.

How Can You Benefit From Them?
Start slowly, if you?ve never used or eaten probiotic rich foods before or supplemented with them once every day to couple of days. If you do not have any negative reactions (bloating, gas etc) continue to slowly up your intake to a few times per day. Examples of proper servings include 4oz kombucha, 2 tablespoons of sauerkraut, 1/2 cup yogurt. I consume fermented foods at least twice daily or use a supplement.

Sources of Probiotics?

Supplements: If you choose you can take a daily capsule.. I recommend and use these. They are award winning and contain over 12 different strands of bacteria as opposed to only one or two.

Sauerkraut: An easy vegetable to add to any meal sauerkraut is a mixture of cabbage, sea salt and water that is fermented over a few days to a few weeks depending on your method. Here?s a link on how to easily make your own. If you?re not into that, Bubbies is my favorite larger commercial brand,? but look for local alternatives (always buy refrigerated kraut as the others are pasteurized leaving them void of any benefit).

Kimchi: Make your own or look in your local Whole Foods or other natural market. A great addition to soups and stews or eaten alone.

Miso: Miso Master, Mr. Miso are both good. Also found in most natural foods or Asian markets. A fermented soybean paste, Miso is great in salad dressings and soups.

Kombucha: Black tea cultured with sugar consuming friendly bacteria. Make your own for cheap! Or I like larger brands like GT?s Synergy as well as those smaller and local to me in Texas.

Atchara: This is a product that took a while for me to get used to but absolutely love now, fermented green papaya.

There are of course other options. If you have any questions about or would like to share your favorite fermented foods please do so!

3 Powerful Tips To Getting Over Your Ex

3 Powerful Tips to Getting Over Your Ex

No one ever said that breaking up with a loved one is ever easy. The most difficult part about this tragedy comes AFTER the break up. Soon after you both part from each other, your mind may be filled with tons of emotions of memories of you and your ex once being happily together. Your emotions will run at lightning speeds and you frequently feel hopeless about what lies ahead for your future, but it's something you will need to get over in order for you to finally move on and enjoy life again.

Many couples have been through this difficult event during some point in their lives. The main factor in moving on is your will and desire to want to move on. If you want to, then you will succeed. It will surely take a while for the pain to subside, but in the end it will be the best thing you can do for yourself. Life is full of wonderful and pleasant surprises ahead, and that's why you need to eventually accept your break up in order to welcome future opportunities of meeting new people. Here are three valuable tips to help you finally get over your ex:

1. Confront Your Pain and Let It All Out

I'm not gonna lie. There will be the turbulence of emotions running through your mind and your heart will feel a pain it's never imagined it can feel before, but if you have the desire to move on and let the pain subside, you will have to face your pain and accept it for what it is. Take some time to let all of your emotions of anger, sadness, and pain out by crying it out. This is a time of reflection with yourself and with what went wrong with you and your ex. Be sure you go through this period alone, meaning no receiving advice from others, including your closest friends and family. They may mean well by giving you their advice, but they aren't you and aren't experiencing the tragedy of your break up. So what they say is easier said than done. By the end of this week after having confronted your pain, you will clearly feel a difference in your spirits and emotions as it will have allowed you to purge out all that emotional baggage you've been keeping inside ever since the break up.

2. Be Conscious and Stop Thinking About Your Ex

After you've given yourself time to cry it out during the first step, you will then move on to this next one. You will need to completely remove anything from your home that brings back any traces of memories of your ex. This includes pictures of you two, pictures of him/her, gifts and meaningful items you both bought together, etc. Lock up the collections of love songs that have meaning behind it and remind you of your times together. Mute saddening love songs that will trigger your emotions for your ex to come back. Anything that brings forth memories of your ex will hinder you from getting over them, so please, do yourself a favor during this stage of overcoming your break up and store that baggage up so you can move forward to step three.

3. Look Forward To The Future

Keeping an optimistic outlook of your dating future may seem difficult, if not impossible, because you have just gone through what seems like one of the most tragic of all situations in your life. But in order to break through fully and move on for once and for all, you will have to welcome future opportunities with dating other people. You will soon realize that you can and will meet someone new who might be much better than your ex has ever been! Surround yourself with positive vibes and hang out at places where you can meet new people. You will be intrigued and amazed with how much fun you've been missing out on ever since your break up. Your spirits will turn around for the better and you will realize how easy it is to actually get over your ex... I wouldn't be surprised if you actually asked, "what ex".

The implementation of a 24-h ICU in-house staff intensivist coverage was associated with improved mortality rates and reduced length of stay, along with quicker decision-making and a positive trend in quality of end-of-life care.

In two separate studies, researchers analyzed outcomes data prior to and after the implementation of the 24-h intensivist staffing model. Both studies showed significant improvements after the staffing change, including reduced mortality rates, decreased length of stay by nearly a half day, as well as improved decision-making and improved quality of care at the end-of-life.

The studies were presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The worst business decisions of all time

By Douglas A. McIntyre, Ashley C. Allen, Samuel Weigley and Michael B. Sauter,?24/7 Wall Street?

In the long history of poor management decisions made at major American companies, only a few proved to be fatal. It is hard to ruin a company with a single decision. That is especially true when the company has the advantages of huge market share, large and rising revenue, and a history of success. But not all bad decisions are created equal. 24/7 Wall St. set out to identify the worst business decisions of all time. These decisions cost these companies billions of dollars and, eventually, their independence.

24/7 Wall St.: Ten Brands That Will Disappear in 2013

Bad business decisions result in financial loss. The worst business decisions lose companies billions in revenue. Our editors relied on Fortune magazine?s annual list of the largest 500 companies ranked by revenue to identify the companies that were the biggest in America and, as a result, capable of losing the most money.

To make the initial cut, companies had to be on the Fortune 100 list for at least 10 consecutive years and then drop off the top 100 ranking for good. We then looked for the companies that made a single identifiable decision that cost them significant revenue and ultimately led to their decline. Based on this cut, 24/7 Wall St. identified the eight companies that suffered from the worst business decisions of all time.

Inclusion at the top of the Fortune 500 is hard to get, but, once won, it is also hard to lose. Nearly three-quarters of 2012?s 100 largest companies have been in the top 100 for at least a decade. This includes 23 that have been there for a quarter century, as well as 13 companies that have been on the list since it debuted in 1955. Even if a company falls out of the top 100, it usually remains a large company for a long time. Seventy companies from the original Fortune 100 are still somewhere on the Fortune 500 list.

Most bad business decisions are not fatal. General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) has made several mistakes, none as harmful as the decision to continue to manufacture large vehicles when the market was trending toward smaller cars. These poor judgment calls led to GM?s bankruptcy in 2009, but with the help of a government bailout it remains in the Fortune 100 today. This is not the case with the companies on this list. The decisions made at these companies eventually ruined each of them.

The worst bad decisions fall into three categories. The managements of Lehman Brothers and Firestone were simply reckless. Leading up to the housing collapse, Lehman executives overleveraged the investment bank, far more than any other large financial institution. Firestone hastily tried to expand into production of a new kind of tire. Both companies ignored internal warnings that their decisions were highly risky.

In the case of Kodak and Motorola, management missed tectonic shifts in their industries until it was too late. Motorola held on to its old cellphone business too long, failing to leverage its Razr brand or couple it with a smartphone until the brand had lost its relevance. Kodak, which actually held a patent for digital cameras well before they were mass produced, eventually was left behind by other digital camera manufacturers like Fuji and Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) that moved quickly to establish market dominance.

Kmart, meanwhile, showed a general lack of foresight. The retailer failed to create modern supply chain management that could support an increase in customers, something it should have expected following its price war with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and aggressive advertising.

24/7 Wall St.: America's Best (and Worst) Educated States

To identify the worst business decisions of all time, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed all Fortune 500 companies since 1955 that have, at any point, been in the top 100 for at least 10 years, but were no longer among them in 2012. A company needed to have either filed for bankruptcy protection or been acquired. The declines in the company?s fortunes also had to have been traced to one identifiable bad decision. For each of these companies, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed revenue and sales data, obtained from Capital IQ, as well as stock price performance.

1. Motorola

  • Years on Fortune 500: 56
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 23 (1994)
  • Peak revenue: $43.7 billion (2006)
  • Current status: Split, Mobility unit sold

The success of the thin and stylish Razr cellphone drove Motorola?s 22 percent market share in mobile phones in 2006. However, the company failed to launch a new generation of smartphones leveraging the Razr brand, and by 2007 the company was selling the traditional cellphone at a discount. By the time the company released a new line of Razr phones in 2010, Motorola had to compete with products such as the iPhone and BlackBerry. While sales in 2006 were more than $43 billion, they were only $22 billion by 2010. Between October 2006 and March 2009, the company?s shares fell more than 90 percent from over $107 to less than $13. Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), had 11.2 percent market share of mobile phones in Aug. 2012, according to comScore. Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone, released in 2007, had a 17.1 percent market share.

2. Lehman Bros.

  • Years on Fortune 500: 14
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 37 (2008)
  • Peak revenue: $59.0 billion (2007)
  • Status: Went bankrupt

During the final few years of the housing bubble, Lehman Brothers increased the amount it borrowed to buy more mortgage-backed securities and real estate. By 2007, the company?s leverage ratio was at least 31-to-1, meaning it borrowed $31 for every $1 in equity. This brought Lehman Brothers huge profits in the boom era but became a serious problem once the housing bubble burst. The firm was unable to unload those assets onto the market once home and commercial real estate prices began falling, leading to unsustainable losses. While other investment banks, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), were heavily leveraged as well, they were able to survive by becoming bank holding companies eligible to receive the necessary emergency funds from the government to continue operations. Those aid programs however, became available too late for Lehman, which went bankrupt in 2008. A federal-bankruptcy-court-sponsored report later found that Lehman and its accounting firm partner, Ernst & Young, used misleading accounting tactics to conceal the extent of Lehman?s overleveraging, which the authors claimed was as high as 44-to-1. Both Lehman executives and Ernst & Young denied these claims. Between 1999 and 2007 Lehman?s revenue grew from less than $19 billion to more than $59 billion. During that time, the company?s rank on the Fortune 500 rose from 88th to 37th.

24/7 Wall St.: States That Drink the Most Beer

3. Firestone

  • Years on Fortune 500: 34
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 24 (1956)
  • Peak revenue: $5.3 billion (1979)
  • Current status: Bought out

Firestone began manufacturing radial tires in 1972 to lengthen the life of the products. The company used a new technique to get its tires to market ahead of competitors. That year, after Firestone?s tire was in production, company documents reported that the rubber came off the wire when the tire was in use. Despite these problems, the company continued to manufacture the tires throughout the 1970s to satisfy demand from customers like General Motors. But following pressure from the government and consumer advocacy groups that were concerned about the safety of the tires, the company recalled approximately 10 million tires in 1978. Initially, Firestone blamed tire failure on substandard maintenance by the consumer. However, an investigation by the National Highway and Traffic Administration in 1980 found that Firestone was actually aware of the defective products, citing to the 1972 documents. This lead to lawsuits and negative publicity that hurt earnings and sales. Although the stock bounced back from its low of $6.25 in April 1980, shares were still below their 1969 peak of $33.25 when Bridgestone successfully bid for the company in 1988.

4. Digital Equipment Corp.

  • Years on Fortune 500: 25
  • Peak Fortune 500 rank: 27 (1990, 1993)
  • Peak revenue: $14.6 billion (1996)
  • Current status: Bought out

The fortunes of Digital Equipment Corp., maker of commercial electronics known as minicomputers, began to decline in the 1990s. DEC was successful because its products were priced below mainframes, which were made primarily by International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM). DEC controlled the minicomputer market from the mid-1960s until the early 1990s but failed to enter the workstation and personal computer markets quickly. When DEC finally decided to get into PCs, it tried to use its own operating platform, VMS, without success. Meanwhile, companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) and Sun Microsystems were able to gain market share in workstations by using UNIX operating system, which allowed for many more software applications than VMS. Meanwhile, computers from Hewlett-Packard and IBM, which were based on the Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) blueprint and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) OS, began to dominate the PC market in the late 1980s. Between 1991 and 1996, DEC lost money every year except for one, including more than $2 billion in 1992 and 1994. After joining the Fortune 500 in 1974, the company peaked in 1993 at 27th. In just six years, it fell to 118th place before Compaq bought it out in 1998.

Building Your Online Business ? How to Do Much Mor | Travel

Time management is one of the most important skills that you can learn as an Internet marketer because when you get more done in less time, you will be able to dedicate more of your time to creating better online marketing strategies and devise new plans to grow your online business. The point though is: what exactly do you need to do to ensure you get as much as possible from your time. Exactly where does your focus need to be if you want to ensure that you can keep working in the right direction to make sure you finish things in time? Keep reading to learn what you can do to get better at this.

Each Internet Marketer has to deal with something called information overload at some point in time and this is something that is better to take care of it near the beginning. Start off by setting filters wherever you can, such as your email, RSS reader, etc. This can help you filter anything that might wind up being time consuming and not of any real use. Besides this, focus only on those informational sources that you trust to deliver the right kind of knowledge at your desk. If you have subscribed to mailing lists that bombard you with less value and more promotional pitches, unsubscribe to them. Learn to skim through the content that you come across on the web when you?re doing your research or when you?re looking for solutions. It is really easy to lose yourself in the huge amount of content that is found on blogs, in forums and elsewhere on the net. This is why you should know how to scan through various pages of content so that you spend less time reading, and more time doing. If something catches your fancy and you want to dig into it, spend some time working through the details or else start skimming.

Make sure your computer has no distractions because these will just slow you down. The absolute worst thing about virtual distractions is that they make you feel like you?re working but you?ll see at the end of your day that you have accomplished exactly nothing. Make sure that you close down all of your IM services (like Skype), your RSS readers, your email client and anything else that gets in the way of your finding success.

So make sure that you have identified and gotten rid of (at least for now) those things that get in the way of your success or slow it down.

If you search on the web, you will find many productivity hacks and various techniques to help you do more, but most of these will be ineffective if you don?t take action. The information we?ve talked about in this article can help you raise your productivity but if you aren?t going to act on what you?ve learned, what?s the point? It?s important to make sure that you put honest effort into reaching your goals so that you don?t just save time but the time you save is used more efficiently because you won?t have to give yourself so many guilt trips to keep going. how to make a guy like you

Paulie Malignaggi wins over Pablo Cesar Cano via split decision ? Boxing News

Brooklynite Paulie Malignaggi was fortunately able to defeat Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano via split decision past Saturday. Malignaggi defended his WBA welterweight championship successfully, living up to the promises he had made to his fans. The fight was part of the Danny Garcia vs. Erik Morales card.

Malignaggi won 114-113 on two scorecards, whereas Cano won 118-109 on one scorecard. It should be noted here that throughout the fight was close, as Cano was the one to strike down Malignaggi during the 11th round of the bout.

?I thought I won the fight. I thought I won pretty handily,? said Malignaggi during the post fight conference. ?He was pressing the action, but he wasn?t laying a lot of shots. I got a little bit lazy. I was controlling the action. He came over the top and he got me good, but I felt like I won the fight,? he added regarding Cano?s fighting skills.

It should be noted here that even though the fight was for Malignaggi?s WBA title, the Brooklynite had nothing to lose as Cano was unable to make the weight.

?He was strong. I don?t know if him not making weight had anything to do with it,? said Malignaggi. ?It was a little bit disappointing not to have the title on the line. I won?t say I lost focus, but it was disappointing.?

On the other hand, Cano suffered severe damage during the showdown. He had a cut over his left eye in the early rounds through a massive punch by Malignaggi.

?I definitely don?t agree with the decision. I fought much better in the second half of the fight,? said Cano who believed he won the fight.

He added that he will come back and that he should have won the decision.

For now, Malignaggi has escalated to 32 wins and 4 losses in his career while Cano fell down to 25 wins and 2 losses.

As expected, Malignaggi is now looking forward to a fight against Briton welterweight fighter Ricky Hatton, who will be making his return in the upcoming weeks.

According to Malignaggi, it would be an honour for him to fight Hatton once again.

Top Facebook executive quits to join London's Tech City

LONDON (Reuters) - Joanna Shields, head of social media group Facebook's operations in Europe, is leaving to join a British government-sponsored venture to create London's answer to Silicon Valley.

Tech City Investment Organisation was set up in April 2011 to attract inward investment focused on an area in London's east End, dubbed "silicon roundabout" and supporting start-ups looking to expand.

It has signed up companies including Cisco, Google and Intel.

"The success of Tech City shows just what can happen when we back some of our most innovative and aspiring companies to grow," Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement on Sunday.

Shields, will join TCIO in January, said she would lead a drive that hopes to make London the number one location for tech in the world.

Her departure will be a blow to Facebook, the world's biggest social network, as the U.S. group seeks to reassure shareholders after a rough reception on Wall Street since its high profile listing in May.

Concern about its slowing revenue growth rate has seen its market valuation halve - Facebook shares closed at $19.00 on Friday, compared with a $38.00 issue price in May.

"Facebook supports the UK Government's vision for building a stronger technology-based economy and start-up ecosystem, and we wish Joanna every success," a company spokesman said.

Earlier this week, Facebook opened an engineering centre in London, its first outside the United States.

44 TSA workers at Newark face firing or suspension

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? The Transportation Security Administration on Friday moved to fire 25 employees at Newark Liberty International Airport and suspend 19 others for what it said was improper screening of checked luggage, the latest in a series of problems at one of the country's busiest airports.

The alleged screening failures were uncovered late last year after surveillance cameras were installed in one of the airport's 25 screening rooms to check for possible thefts, the TSA said.

Eight employees were fired in June in the investigation. The latest action raises to 52 the number of TSA employees at Newark caught up in the investigation, making it the biggest single disciplinary action taken by the TSA at a U.S. airport.

An official of a union that represents some of the Newark employees said Friday it's likely the union will seek to have the employees reinstated. The union has seven days to answer the TSA's proposal.

"The charges right now seem to be improper screening of bags, which we don't feel is correct," said Stacy Dodtmann, regional vice president of the American Federation of Government Employees. "We feel they performed their jobs to what they were trained to do."

The latest group cited includes screeners, as well as managers accused of failing to effectively supervise their employees. Among the allegations is that screeners failed to open up and physically check bags that had been flagged by X-ray machines.

All the screeners cited for failing to follow procedures were removed from their jobs in November and December and given non-screening duties pending completion of the investigation, the TSA said.

The TSA has more than 1,400 employees at Newark, one of the New York area's three major airports.

"The decision to take disciplinary actions today with the proposed removal of 25 individuals and suspension of 19 others reaffirms our strong commitment to ensure the safety of the traveling public and to hold all our employees to the highest standards of conduct and accountability," said Lisa Farbstein, a TSA spokeswoman.

The theft investigation, which the TSA said was the reason the cameras were installed, did not lead to any charges. The TSA said an employee who was a suspect in that probe ended up resigning, though the cameras were left in place, turning up the screening lapses.

The previous biggest disciplinary action taken by the TSA was last year at Honolulu International Airport, where 48 employees were proposed for firing or suspension, also for failing to properly screen luggage.

All 44 employees cited Friday have the right to appeal. The proposed suspensions would be for up to 14 days, and without pay.

"This TSA corrective action will help address the recurring problems at Newark Airport and close security gaps to keep the airport and passengers safe," said Sen. Frank Lautenberg, a New Jersey Democrat who is vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee and whose request last year led to the Department of Homeland Security's investigation into security lapses at the airport.

In one incident in 2010, a graduate student slipped under a rope barrier and entered a restricted area without going through security, forcing the shutdown of the terminal for six hours and causing flight delays around the globe.

Others didn't put the public at risk but involved travelers leaving checkpoints without being properly screened.

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, criticized Friday what he called the TSA's "parade of failures."

"Clearly this is not a Newark problem or a Honolulu problem, or a problem isolated to one or two airports," Mica said in a statement. "I lay the blame at TSA because it's a bureaucracy that doesn't know how to manage an army of 65,000 employees."

Mars soil sample delivered for analysis inside rover

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has ingested its first solid sample into an analytical instrument inside the rover, a capability at the core of the two-year mission.

The rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument is analyzing this sample to determine what minerals it contains.

"We are crossing a significant threshold for this mission by using CheMin on its first sample," said Curiosity's project scientist, John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "This instrument gives us a more definitive mineral-identifying method than ever before used on Mars: X-ray diffraction. Confidently identifying minerals is important because minerals record the environmental conditions under which they form."

The sample is a sieved portion -- about as much material as in a baby aspirin -- from the third scoop collected by Curiosity as a windblown patch of dusty sand called "Rocknest." The rover's robotic arm delivered the sample to CheMin's opened inlet funnel on the rover's deck on Oct. 17.

The previous day, the rover shook the scooped material inside sample-processing chambers to scrub internal surfaces of any residue carried from Earth. One earlier scoopful was also used for cleaning. Additional repetitions of this cleaning method will be used before delivery of a future sample to the rover's other internal analytic instrument, the Sample Analysis at Mars investigation, which studies samples' chemistry.

Various small bits of light-toned material on the ground at Rocknest have affected the rover's activities in the past several days. One piece about half an inch (1.3 centimeters) long was noticed on Oct. 7. The rover team postponed use of the robotic arm for two days while investigating this object, and assessed it to be debris from the spacecraft.

Images taken after Curiosity collected its second scoop of Rocknest material on Oct. 12 showed smaller bits of light-toned material in the hole dug by the scooping action. This led to discarding that scoopful rather than using it to scrub the processing mechanisms. Scientists assess these smaller, bright particles to be native Martian material, not from the spacecraft.

"We plan to learn more both about the spacecraft material and about the smaller, bright particles," said Curiosity Project Manager Richard Cook of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena. "We will finish determining whether the spacecraft material warrants concern during future operations. The native Mars particles become fodder for the mission's scientific studies."

During a two-year prime mission, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to assess whether the study area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life. JPL, a division of Caltech, manages the project and built Curiosity. For more about Curiosity, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/msl , http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/msl and http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl .
